Welcome!

Welcome to the SpeechSTAR Speech and Language Therapy website! We offer a visual approach to learning about speech sounds. Most of the videos on this site are real-time animations of vocal tract movements during speech, based on recordings made with Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The aim of this video-based resource is to help you understand how consonant sounds are produced and to understand the differences and similarities between English speech sounds.

Resources

  • Half-head vocal-tract animations of:
    • The consonants of English
    • Common consonantal substitutions
    • The sounds of the IPA and extIPA
  • Videos explaining ultrasound tongue imaging and its use in therapy
  • Videos showing ultrasound tongue imaging therapy sessions
